Bookcase Makeover: Before and After

bookshelfafter1.5

Hi everyone- I don’t know why I never noticed this, but I have a lot of dark wood furniture!  And, I am over it.  Yes, my son would say, “hashtag suburban mom probs.”  So when I saw this before/after project on BH&G.com of a very similar bookcase I knew I could do this.
Before:

BHG BOOKCASE BEFORE
Here is the  after from BH &G.

BHG BOOKCASE AFTER

Here’s my bookcase.  We bought it at the Pottery Barn floor sale a few years ago.  And, I am over the dark wood furniture in our house!  Over. It.  So when I saw the inspiration above I knew it would work!  Thank you BH&G! It’s been all over the house.   You could said this bookcase gets around! Ba dum dum!

Here is the after. I primed it and then painted it with Behr Mascarpone!

I am really happy with it. It is so much lighter and I ended up putting it in my office!  Do you notice the legs? I left them the original stain.  I kinda like it!  The color  lightened up my office and provides great storage!   Big office reveal coming in a few weeks! After taxes!

Do you see an office behind these doors? Exactly! Check it out!

As  business owners, we have plenty of office space.  We  own a commercial property that is currently being leased, my  husband leases a small space in a commercial business park for very little money (it is cheaper than couples counseling- we did the math).  But my {first} husband still needs a home office.  But, he can’t have  share mine- or that would make me his {former} wife!  He doesn’t need much but he needs to have a quiet corner for those work at home nights and weekends!

This is what we started with behind these doors:

And, storage for electronic boxes and ski bags below!

The other side of the closet.  This is staying! We need a place for coats, shoes. This closet is right next to the entry to the garage!

Ripped it all out on my own!  I didn’t get a before shot of these shelves in the closest. The previous  horizontal wire shelves  ran the length of the closet.  It left a lot of deep,  wasted space which  meant a lot of potential for home office storage!  My guy did a quick paint job while I ran boys to friends’ houses for the afternoon!   Boom!

And, then we got to work on building the shelves to the left of the door’s opening.   We used the same melamine shelving we used in our pantry project!   Building horizontal shelves allowed my {first}  husband to have space for current files and a wireless printer.

Here’s the finished office in a closet!  One of his “must haves” was his need  to have a desk with the space to have not one but two screens to work off of simultaneously.  He is a finance and healthcare strategy guy!  Busy times!!!

This project was very easy!  It took an afternoon with both of us cutting the shelves.   It was so much easier than our pantry project in January because we had straight cuts on the shelves- no corner shelves to build!    I love it! He loves it!
